At the centre of community cohesion
To achieve community cohesion you need glue; you need something that acts to hold all of the important parts together. MMWF does exactly that. MMWF acts within the community to promote community vibrancy and cohesion.
At the heart of all our work is the important role of celebrating cultural diversity. We demonstrate the vital role each community can play in developing wider society. This gives all communities in the area respect for their own culture, and then by then gluing these together, we work towards social and economic prosperity for all. We want to remove the barriers to social and economic activity and so take our community forward.
MMWF is working within the Bangladeshi, Somali and all other ethnic communities providing two key roles.
Develop cultural identity:
First, MMWF acts within the community to develop cultural identity. Historically this part of East London has been one of the most diverse. Each community has a wonderful set of traditions that MMWF ensures are celebrated, developed, adapted and continued. Through a range of activities people are brought together to enable the continuation of tradition, festivals and art. This facilitates and encourages traditions from further afield to be adopted, adapted and applied.
Provide support to vulnerable members of the community:
he second role is a vital one. MMWF then takes this celebration of cultural diversity, gives support to vulnerable members of the community and links it the wider social and economic landscape. It works with other community groups and social actors to enable each culture to play its role and develop its identity. This will promote social cohesion, break down barriers and promote social and economic participation.
